Modern art

The modern art collections focus on Belgian art in the 20th century, and include nearly 2,200 paintings, sculptures and drawings. The best represented schools are abstract art of the 1920s and the post-war period, the geometric trends of the second half of the 20th century, and the artists in the tradition of the Cobra group and the new figurative art in the 1970s.

A large part of the collections comes from donations made to the museum by Serge Goyens de Heusch in 1986, 2004 and 2008. In addition to the main modern art collections, the print collections include important sets by single artists such as Miró or Picasso, and groups of work from a particular school, such as German Expressionism.
