Sciences

The Musée L has the privilege of presenting a fine sample of the scientific heritage of UCLouvain. Some of these collections, initiated in the 19th century, have been used as teaching aids during courses, others are real testimonies of research work.
Collection

Folk art

The folk art collections contain just over 14,000 items dating from the 16th to the 20th century. These sometimes unusual pieces reflect the customs, beliefs and expressions current in Europe during this period, and open up exciting fields of research between art history and ethnology.
Collection

Modern art

The modern art collections focus on Belgian art in the 20th century. The best represented schools are abstract art of the 1920s and the post-war period, the geometric trends of the second half of the 20th century, and the artists in the tradition of the Cobra group and the new figurative art.

The cast collection was begun in 1864 and has more than 1,000 items. It covers the major periods in the history of art from antiquity to the 20th century.
Collection

Antiquity

The collections from Antiquity contain some 2,000 items, mainly from the Mediterranean region. Some of these are notable for their aesthetic appeal and excellent state of conservation, while other more fragmentary items are of value for the light they throw on a particular technical process.

Prints

The print collections contain about 2,500 items covering the entire history of prints from the 15th century to the present day.
Collection

Non-European

The museum has nearly 2,000 pieces from Africa, Asia, America and Oceania. African art is best represented by an old University collection assembled in the early 20th century in the context of Belgian colonial activity, and then divided with KULeuven in 1968.
